Chasing Waterfalls

Did you know Hamilton is the waterfall capital of the world?

Hamilton may be the home to over 100 waterfalls and the best hiking trails in the nation. If you are up for a hike, and extravagant views then you should totally checkout some of the most beautiful views of waterfalls right here in Ontario.

We are currently striving to checkoff a couple spots off our bucket-list in hopes that we can visit some of Ontario’s waterfalls. Throughout this post we are going to share some cool facts, and some of our adventure tips on how we hiked our way to see some glorious water sanctuaries.

1. Albion Falls

Albion Falls is known to be the most popular waterfalls to see despite there being no access to the bottom. The size of this waterfall is quite extraordinary, as it is 19 m tall and 18 m wide. It’s unique qualities also comes from its history. Throughout time, rock has formulated multiple shelves allowing the water to flow and fan out into one large cascade of water.

When we first arrived at the park, it was just around noon on a hot Friday. The sun was blazing, the air was fresh and all you could hear were the birds chirping. There was barley anyone around. The trial we decided to take was called the blue brace trial, which allowed us to also see Buttermilk falls. If you don’t want to take the longer trial no worries, there are always other options.

Tips to always remember while hiking:

  • Be careful where you are stepping as the trial can become quite rugged with tree roots.

  • Never walk along the edge of the trial. The gorge down is quite deep.

  • Watch out for Poison Ivey anywhere along the trial.

Once we have reached the designated lookout spot, you could see the crystal-clear water quite clearly, and the lush green trees surrounding it. Even though the falls were in a clear distance, you could still hear the falls gushing on the rocks below.

2. Buttermilk Falls

Buttermilk falls is about 23m tall and believe it or not water only runs at certain times of the year. Luckily, we were able to see the glorious waterfall. Seeing the beautiful images taken by other visitors, we right away thought we could walk right up to it. But, it turns out there wasn’t a designated trail. However, this did not stop us from exploring a little further.

If you take the chance to experience the hike towards Buttermilk, you will notice a little spot hiding in the trees that allowed us to take the perfect camera shot.

By the time we finished our hike, we’d had accomplished hiking 3.46 km. We’d say we weren’t that tired and there was always time to explore a little more.

3. Tiffany Falls

We ended our day off by taking a shorter hike towards Tiffany falls. It was about a 5-10-minute walk on a clear pathed trial and a few wooden bridges. The trail ended once we reach the falls. It is very difficult to miss, as we started to feel a small misty breeze just a short distance away. It is a 21m high cascade waterfall, which provides the perfect spot for a photo shoot. You can reach your hand out and touch the water trickling down or you can experience a waterfall shower directly under the falls. We both suggest you bring a swimsuit because you are going to get pretty wet!

Looking back at the day as a whole, we’d say we had so much fun adventuring some of Hamilton’s most beautiful falls. It’s a fantastic way to get outside and get a small leg workout in there and of course spending some quality time with family.
