A “Berry” Fun Adventure

Who’d know picking a raspberry off its stem would be so satisfying?

Nothing was better than experiencing a warm summer evening at a farm surrounded by endless fields of raspberries.

It had been a sunny but cool late afternoon when we decided to visit Marcy’s Berries. Marcy’s Berries is a local farm found in Puslinch, Ontario, which freshly grows and sells a wide variety of berries. Besides raspberries, they also offer gooseberries, strawberries, and currants. If you are not a fan of picking, no worries, they sell berries already picked. That day, our entire family had picked a quart of raspberries each, and we left with plenty to enjoy.

Deciding to pick raspberries in the middle of July was a win! We can definitely say that we did gather a lot that were tasty. However, there were also many berries that were not quite ripe yet. Sometimes finding the perfect fruit isn’t always easy. It takes some patience and determination. At one point, it took more than just spotting the raspberry from a short distance; you literally have to search the entire bush!

“How do I know if the fruit is ripened enough?”

A little tip on how to identify a raspberry is ripe enough is the vibrant red colour. Next, picking the raspberry should completely effortless. As soon as you touch the raspberry it should just fall right into your hand. If you have to tug and pull at the raspberry, this means that it is not ready yet.

Another tip when picking raspberries is watching out for bees. There were many bees circling around the bushes throughout our entire experience. They were completely harmless and were just finding the perfect flower to pollenate. It is also important to keep in mind that raspberry bushes have thorns. Although picking can be fun, watch out, you don’t want to be pricked!

If you love fruit picking just as much as we do, you can take the chance this summer to visit a variety of spots in Ontario. The season lasts between the months of July to October. Don’t forget to grab your hat and embrace the experience. Truly the simple moments in life bring us so much joy.
