Growing A Garden, A True Family Tradition

Have you ever grown a fresh garden before?

As we all may know the lifespan of growing a garden in Canada can be quite limiting hence the fact that the weather is not really promising. Majority of the year is too cool to grow an outdoor garden. However, if you are as motivated as my grandparents and want to enjoy fresh fruit and vegetables right at your fingertips then you should totally grow a garden.

My grandparents started to expand their garden this past season to a variety of new crops. They just finished are growing cucumbers, tomatoes, beans, squash, cantaloupe, watermelon, parsley, lettuce, peppers, mint, thyme, rosemary and a few fruit trees on the way. Every time we visited, we are always sure to check up on progress of these crops. Over the last couple of visits, we have been able to gather a substantial amount of tomatoes, lettuce, beans, cucumbers and squash.

Although growing a garden can seem to be quite rewarding in the end, it is easier said than done. Maintaining a garden takes a lot of patience and effort.

Work that comes along with of growing a garden:

  • Constantly needing to water the garden

  • Trimming back some of the leaves and branches

  • Ensure crops don’t die or become damaged

My family and I once, years ago, grew a garden but it became way too difficult to maintain due to all the wildlife that surrounds us in our backyard. We surrounded the garden with chicken wire and still the rabbits, birds, and deer still manage to eat our crops.

As a whole, it does not matter what we gather from the garden or even the work that is needed to keep the garden prospering. But, being able to spend some time with our grandparents truly means so much to us. Spending time in the garden has become an annual family event that we will always remember.

Pros of growing a garden:

  • No harmful pesticides just fresh fruit and vegetables

  • Picking and sharing crops with family

  • Creating family memories

  • Seeing all different types of wildlife live in the garden.

Whenever you have the opportunity to visit your loved ones be sure to accomplish something with them. Cook, visit places, or just simply share some of your favourite memories with them. This thanksgiving season brings us so much joy and reminds us to always be grateful and thankful for the people who have made a difference in our lives.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE!
